How to Select a Dental Hygienist College near Mullica Hill New Jersey

Mullica Hill NJ dental hygienist with patientChoosing the right dental hygienist program near Mullica Hill NJ is an important initial step toward launching your new career in dentistry. But before you can make your choice, you need to assess and compare your school options. There is much more to doing your due diligence than selecting the college with the lowest tuition or enrolling in the college that is closest to your residence. There are other crucial factors to take into account also, for instance the program’s reputation and accreditation. Dental hygienists typically earn an Associate Degree, as compared to a certificate usually earned by assistants, and can take anywhere from two to three years to finish. Naturally with the lengthier training of a hygienist comes more expense. We will discuss all of these considerations and supplemental questions that you should be asking the dental hygienist colleges you are reviewing later in this article. But first, let’s explore the roles of dental hygienists and the training programs offered.

The Role of a Dental Hygienist

Mullica Hill NJ pediatric dental hygienist with patientWhen comparing the role of a dental assistant to that of a hygienist, the main difference is probably that the hygienist works more independently. Dental assistants work with and in support of the Mullica Hill NJ dentists and the practice. Hygienists, while also supporting the practice, work with the patients more on a one-to-one basis. They are typically the first person a patient interacts with when called from the waiting room. They examine each patient’s teeth and gums and present their findings to the dentists. They also may carry out basic procedures. Based on state law, a hygienist’s duties can include:

  • Removing stains, tartar and plaque
  • Administering fluoride treatments
  • Applying sealants and polishing teeth
  • Instructing patients about oral hygiene
  • Taking X-rays and developing film
  • Removing sutures and applying fillings

To qualify for licensing in almost all states, dental hygienists must graduate from a Commission on Dental Accreditation (CDA) accredited dental hygiene program. They must also pass the National Board Dental Hygiene Exam in addition to passing any state licensure examinations. After they have completed these requirements they are regarded as fully licensed and may add the “RDH” designation to their names, standing for Registered Dental Hygienist.

Dental Hygienist Training Options

Because of the additional responsibility as compared to an assistant, dental hygienists employed in Mullica Hill NJ dental offices are normally required to hold an Associate Degree in dental hygiene rather than a certificate. These programs can take anywhere from two to as long as three years to finish and must be accredited by the CDA in nearly every state. They are offered in community colleges as well as trade and technical schools. And in addition to classroom studies learning the fundamentals of dental hygiene, there will be a clinical component to the training as well| A number of programs also sponsor internships with local dental practices or dentists.

Dental Hygienist Online Classes

attending dental hygienist school online in Mullica Hill NJSelecting an online dental hygienist school might be a great option for obtaining your training. Just keep in mind that the program will not be totally online, since there will be a practical component to your training. But the remainder of your classes will be provided via your personal computer in the comfort of your Mullica Hill NJ home or elsewhere on your laptop or tablet. For those working while attending college, online dental classes make education far more obtainable. Many may even have lower tuition rates than their on-campus competitors. And additional expenses such as for books, school supplies and commuting may be lessened also. The clinical training can often be completed at a community dental office or in an on-campus lab. With both the clinical and online training, everything required to obtain the proper education is provided. If you have the discipline for this method of education, you might find that attending an online dental hygienist program is the ideal option for you.

What to Cover With Dental  Hygienist Colleges

As we discussed at the opening of this article, many prospective students start by checking out the location and the cost of the schools. Maybe they search for several online alternatives also. Although these are relevant initial considerations, there are several additional questions that you need to ask of the programs you are reviewing in order to reach an informed decision. Toward that end, we have provided a list of questions to help you with your due diligence and ultimate selection of the best dental hygienist school for you.

Is the Dental School Accredited? There are many important reasons why you should only select an accredited dental hygienist college. If you are intending to become certified or licensed, then accreditation is a prerequisite in almost all states. In order to take the National Board Dental Hygiene Examination, your dental school must be accredited by the Commission on Dental Accreditation (CDA). Accreditation also helps establish that the education you receive is of the highest quality and comprehensive. Mullica Hill NJ employers often prefer or require that new hires are graduates of accredited programs. And finally, if you are requesting a student loan or financial aid, often they are not offered for non-accredited programs.

Is Enough Clinical Training Provided? Practical or clinical training is an essential portion of every dental training program. This holds true for the online school options as well. A number of dental hygienist programs have associations with area dental offices and clinics that furnish practical training for their students. It’s not only imperative that the program you enroll in provides sufficient clinical hours but also provides them in the kind of practice that you ultimately want to work in. As an example, if you have an interest in a career in pediatric dentistry, confirm that the program you enroll in offers clinical rotation in a local Mullica Hill NJ dental practice that focuses on dental care for children.

Are Internships Available? Find out if the dental programs you are evaluating have internship programs. Internships are probably the ideal means to obtain hands-on, clinical experience in a real dental practice. They make it easier for students to transition from the theoretical to the practical. They can also help students build professional relationships in the Mullica Hill NJ dentistry community. And they are attractive on resumes too.

Is Job Placement Help Offered? Most students that have graduated from dental hygienist schools need help landing their first job. Find out if the colleges you are considering have job placement programs, and what their job placement rates are. Schools with high job placement rates probably have excellent reputations within the Mullica Hill NJ dental profession in addition to large networks of contacts where they can position their students for employment or internships.

Are the Classrooms Smaller? Check with the programs you are looking at how big on average their classes are. The smaller classes generally offer a more personal atmosphere for training where students have increased access to the instructors. On the other hand, larger classes can be impersonal and provide little individualized instruction. If practical, ask if you can sit in on a few classes at the Mullica Hill NJ dental hygienist school that you are leaning toward so that you can witness first hand the level of interaction between students and instructors before enrolling.

What is the Overall Expense of the Program? Dental hygiene programs can fluctuate in cost depending on the duration of the program and the volume of practical training provided. Other variables, such as the reputations of the schools and if they are private or public also have an impact. But in addition to the tuition there are other substantial costs which can add up. They can include costs for such things as textbooks and commuting as well as school equipment, materials and supplies. So when comparing the cost of programs, don’t forget to add all of the costs related to your education. Most colleges have financial assistance offices, so make sure to ask what is available as far as loans, grants and scholarships in the Mullica Hill NJ area.

Are the Classes Accessible? Before enrolling in a dental hygienist school, you must confirm that the hygienist or assistant program provides classes that suit your schedule. This is particularly true if you continue working while getting your education and must go to classes near Mullica Hill NJ at nights or on weekends. And even if you select an online school, you will still have to schedule your clinical training classes. Also, while addressing your concerns, ask what the make-up practice is if you should need to miss any classes due to work, illness or family issues.

Mullica Hill, New Jersey

Mullica Hill is a census-designated place (CDP) and unincorporated community located within Harrison Township, in Gloucester County, New Jersey, United States.[7][8] As of the 2010 United States Census, the CDP's population was 3,982.[3]

Spicerville was the name of a village on the south bank of Raccoon Creek, which is also called Raccoon River, named after prominent landowner Jacob Spicer. Mullica Hill originally referred to the village on the north bank of Raccoon Creek, named after the sons of Eric Pålsson Mullica, whose sons William, Eric, Olag and John Mullica began purchasing land here in 1704. Eventually, both villages became known as just Mullica Hill as the original name of Eric's grandfather's house in the Middle of Finland "Mullikkamäki" (mäki means hill). Some of Mullica Hill's historic buildings were built following the Civil War, notably the town hall that still stands today. The period of industrial and agricultural growth during and after the Civil War is commemorated by a reenactment every fall. In 1991, the entire village was placed on the National Register of Historic Places as the Mullica Hill Historic District.[9]

According to the United States Census Bureau, the CDP had a total area of 3.626 square miles (9.392 km2), including 3.603 square miles (9.333 km2) of land and 0.023 square miles (0.059 km2) of water (0.63%).[1][10]

As of the 2010 United States Census, there were 3,982 people, 1,456 households, and 1,104 families residing in the CDP. The population density was 1,105.1 per square mile (426.7/km2). There were 1,502 housing units at an average density of 416.8 per square mile (160.9/km2). The racial makeup of the CDP was 92.87% (3,698) White, 3.84% (153) Black or African American, 0.08% (3) Native American, 1.33% (53) Asian, 0.00% (0) Pacific Islander, 0.45% (18) from other races, and 1.43% (57) from two or more races.
