Whiteville, Tennessee

Whiteville is a town in Hardeman County, Tennessee, United States. The population was 3,148 at the 2000 census and 4,638 at the 2010 census,[7] showing an increase of 1,490. Whiteville is the location of two privately owned prisons, Whiteville Correctional Facility and Hardeman County Correctional Center.

Whiteville is located in northwestern Hardeman County at 35°19′28″N 89°8′45″W / 35.32444°N 89.14583°W / 35.32444; -89.14583 (35.324496, -89.145721).[8]U.S. Route 64 runs through the southern part of the town, leading southeast 11 miles (18 km) to Bolivar, the county seat, and southwest 13 miles (21 km) to Somerville. Tennessee State Route 100 runs east from Whiteville 30 miles (48 km) to Henderson. State Route 179 runs north from the center of Whiteville 15 miles (24 km) to Interstate 40 at Willis.

According to the United States Census Bureau, Whiteville has a total area of 2.7 square miles (7.1 km2), all land.[7] The town is drained by the headwaters of Hickory Creek, which flows north to the Hatchie River.

As of the census[5] of 2000, there were 3,148 people, 457 households, and 308 families residing in the town. The population density was 1,317.7 people per square mile (508.6/km²). There were 510 housing units at an average density of 213.5 per square mile (82.4/km²). The racial makeup of the town was 38.02% White, 60.93% African American, 0.10% Native American, 0.06% Asian, 0.13% from other races, and 0.76% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 0.76% of the population.

Winchester, Tennessee

Winchester was created as the seat of justice for Franklin County by act of the Tennessee Legislature on November 22, 1809, and was laid out the following year.[1] The town is named for James Winchester, a soldier in the American Revolution, first Speaker of the Tennessee Legislature, and a brigadier general in the War of 1812.

Mary Sharp College (originally the "Tennessee and Alabama Female Institute", but later renamed in honor of Mary Corn Sharp, a donor) was founded in 1851 by Dr. Z. C. Graves and the Baptist Church. Though a women's college, it offered a classical curriculum based upon what was being offered at the time by Amherst College, Brown University, and the University of Virginia. It closed in 1896.[1] During the 19th century, the institution helped make Winchester an educational center. Other private schools in the city were Carrick Academy for male students (founded in 1809), Winchester Female Academy (founded in 1835), and Winchester Normal College.[8][9]

The city was occupied first by Confederate and then by Union troops during the Civil War. Winchester, along with the rest of Franklin County, seceded from the Union several months before the rest of Tennessee, unofficially becoming a part of Alabama until the rest of the state seceded. It lay on the line of retreat to Chattanooga followed by the Confederate Army of Tennessee during the campaign of 1863.

Recreation in Winchester received a significant boost when the Tennessee Valley Authority started construction of the Tims Ford Dam along the Elk River in 1966. The project was completed in 1972, and Tims Ford Lake is now known for excellent boating and bass fishing opportunities. Tims Ford State Park is located along the lake's shoreline.

Winfield, Tennessee

Winfield is a town in Scott County, Tennessee, United States. Originally named Chitwood in the late 18th century for Revolutionary War hero Captain James Chitwood after his family settled the area extensively, the name was changed following the Civil War due to the family's mixed allegiances. The population was 911 at the 2000 census and 967 at the 2010 census.

As of the census[3] of 2000, there were 911 people, 356 households, and 259 families residing in the town. The population density was 143.2 people per square mile (55.3/km²). There were 380 housing units at an average density of 59.7 per square mile (23.1/km²). The racial makeup of the town was 98.13% White, 0.99% Native American, 0.11% Asian, and 0.77% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 0.33% of the population.

There were 356 households out of which 34.6% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 55.1% were married couples living together, 13.8% had a female householder with no husband present, and 27.2% were non-families. 22.8% of all households were made up of individuals and 7.6% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.56 and the average family size was 2.97.

In the town, the population was spread out with 27.3% under the age of 18, 10.4% from 18 to 24, 29.4% from 25 to 44, 24.3% from 45 to 64, and 8.6% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 32 years. For every 100 females there were 93.8 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 94.7 males.

Woodbury, Tennessee

Woodbury is a town in Cannon County, Tennessee, United States. Woodbury is part of the Nashville Metropolitan Statistical Area and is located 55 miles (89 km) southeast of downtown Nashville. The population of Woodbury was 2,680 at the 2010 census.[7] It is the county seat of Cannon County.[8]

Woodbury is a small town located near the center of Cannon County at 35°49′25″N 86°4′13″W / 35.82361°N 86.07028°W / 35.82361; -86.07028 (35.823644, -86.070268).[9] It is in the valley of the East Fork of the Stones River, part of the Cumberland River watershed flowing through Nashville.

U.S. Route 70S passes through the town, leading west 19 miles (31 km) to Murfreesboro and southeast 20 miles (32 km) to McMinnville. Tennessee State Route 53 leads south from Woodbury 24 miles (39 km) to Manchester and north 16 miles (26 km) to Liberty. From the west side of Woodbury, Tennessee State Route 145 leads north 10 miles (16 km) to Auburntown.

As of the census[5] of 2010, there were 2,680 people, 1,052 households, and 608 families residing in the town. The population density was 1,552.0 people per square mile (541.9/km²). There were 1,159 housing units at an average density of 671.1 per square mile (258.7/km²). The racial makeup of the town was 94.36% White, 3.83% African American, 0.54% Native American, 0.04% Asian, 0.04% Pacific Islander, 0.41% from other races, and 0.78% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 2.35% of the population.

Springfield, Tennessee

As of the census[2] of 2000, there were 14,329 people, 5,453 households, and 3,778 families residing in the city. The population density was 1,173.9 people per square mile (453.1/km²). There were 5,836 housing units at an average density of 478.1 per square mile (184.5/km²). The racial makeup of the city was 70.56% White, 25.91% African American, 0.37% Native American, 0.56% Asian, 0.03% Pacific Islander, 1.76% from other races, and 0.81% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 6.94% of the population.

There were 5,453 households out of which 31.8% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 45.7% were married couples living together, 18.4% had a female householder with no husband present, and 30.7% were non-families. 25.8% of all households were made up of individuals and 11.7% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.55 and the average family size was 3.00.

In the city, the population was spread out with 24.8% under the age of 18, 11.2% from 18 to 24, 29.1% from 25 to 44, 20.4% from 45 to 64, and 14.6% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 35 years. For every 100 females there were 92.9 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 89.1 males.

The median income for a household in the city was $33,379, and the median income for a family was $42,018. Males had a median income of $32,270 versus $22,765 for females. The per capita income for the city was $17,322. About 13.7% of families and 17.7% of the population were below the poverty line, including 22.7% of those under age 18 and 17.7% of those age 65 or over.

The Chattanooga–Cleveland–Dalton, TN–GA–AL Combined Statistical Area covers a total of thirteen counties – seven in southeast Tennessee, five in northwest Georgia, and one in northeast Alabama. The combined statistical area consists of three metropolitan statistical areas – Chattanooga, Cleveland, and Dalton – as well as the Athens, Dayton, and Scottsboro micropolitan statistical areas. At the 2010 census, the CSA had a population of 923,460. [1]

Summertown, Tennessee

Summertown is an unincorporated community and census-designated place (CDP) in Lawrence County, Tennessee with a small portion in both Lewis County and Maury County.[3] The population of Summertown was 866 at the 2010 census.[2]

Unicoi County, Tennessee

Unicoi County is a county located in the U.S. state of Tennessee. As of the 2010 census, the population was 18,313.[2] Its county seat is Erwin.[3]Unicoi is a Cherokee word meaning "white," "hazy," "fog-like," or "fog draped."[1]

Unicoi County is part of the Johnson City Metropolitan Statistical Area, which is a component of the Johnson City–Kingsport–Bristol, TN-VA Combined Statistical Area, commonly known as the "Tri-Cities" region.

Unicoi County was created in 1875 from portions of Washington and Carter counties. Its first settlers had arrived more than century earlier but the population had been small.[1] The county remained predominantly agrarian until the railroads were constructed in the area in the 1880s.[1]

During the 1910s, the Clinchfield Railroad established a pottery in Erwin, which eventually incorporated under the name, "Southern Potteries." This company produced a popular brand of dishware, commonly called Blue Ridge China, which featured hand-painted underglaze designs. While the company folded in the 1950s, Blue Ridge dishes remain popular with antique collectors.[1]

The racial makeup of the county was 93.43% White, 3.59% Black or African American, 0.30% Native American, 0.74% Asian, 0.03% Pacific Islander, 0.91% from other races, and 1.00% from two or more races. 2.19% of the population were Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There were 18,885 households out of which 32.40% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 56.90% were married couples living together, 11.10% had a female householder with no husband present, and 28.00% were non-families. 24.30% of all households were made up of individuals and 10.30% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.50 and the average family size was 2.96.

In the county, the population was spread out with 25.10% under the age of 18, 8.30% from 18 to 24, 28.40% from 25 to 44, 23.60% from 45 to 64, and 14.60% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 38 years. For every 100 females there were 95.10 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 92.30 males.

Union City, Tennessee

Union City is a city located in Obion County, Tennessee, United States.[6] The 2010 census reported the population of the town as 10,895. Union City is the principal city of the surrounding micropolitan area, which includes Obion County and Fulton County, Kentucky.

Union City is recognized for the following: It was the site of a minor American Civil War battle in March 1864, and it was the site of a Goodyear Tire and Rubber Company/Goodyear Tire plant, which generated a large amount of the city's economy. It is also the hometown of both Congressman, John S. Tanner and Jerry L. Gurien, the inventor of stone washed jeans and Gurien Finishing Corp., which developed a process in the 1980s that stone-washed jeans and denims.

The Discovery Park of America serves as a major attraction in the state of Tennessee and is located within city limits. It was founded by Robert Kirkland and opened its doors in 2013. Union City is approximately 30–45 minutes from Reelfoot Lake. This well-known lake was formed from the 1811–12 New Madrid earthquakes and is a popular recreational boating and fishing location in the state. Union City is also approximately 15–20 minutes from the University of Tennessee at Martin.
