Hot spring

A hot spring is a spring produced by the emergence of geothermally heated groundwater that rises from the Earth's crust. While some of these springs contain water that is a safe temperature for bathing, others are so hot that immersion can result in injury or death.

The related term "warm spring" is defined as a spring with water temperature less than a hot spring by many sources, although Pentecost et al. (2003) suggest that the phrase "warm spring" is not useful and should be avoided.[14] The US NOAA Geophysical Data Center defines a "warm spring" as a spring with water between 20 and 50 °C (68 and 122 °F)

Water issuing from a hot spring is heated geothermally, that is, with heat produced from the Earth's mantle. In general, the temperature of rocks within the earth increases with depth. The rate of temperature increase with depth is known as the geothermal gradient. If water percolates deeply enough into the crust, it will be heated as it comes into contact with hot rocks. The water from hot springs in non-volcanic areas is heated in this manner.

In active volcanic zones such as Yellowstone National Park, water may be heated by coming into contact with magma (molten rock). The high temperature gradient near magma may cause water to be heated enough that it boils or becomes superheated. If the water becomes so hot that it builds steam pressure and erupts in a jet above the surface of the Earth, it is called a geyser. If the water only reaches the surface in the form of steam, it is called a fumarole. If the water is mixed with mud and clay, it is called a mud pot.

Scobey, Montana

The city was named by local rancher Mansfield Daniels, after whom Daniels County is named, for his friend Major Charles Richardson Anderson Scobey, a cattleman from the Glendive area who served as a Montana Territory legislator and an Indian agent at Fort Peck and Poplar.[6]

As of the census[2] of 2010, there were 1,017 people, 472 households, and 252 families residing in the city. The population density was 1,338.2 inhabitants per square mile (516.7/km2). There were 600 housing units at an average density of 789.5 per square mile (304.8/km2). The racial makeup of the city was 94.9% White, 0.1% African American, 2.5% Native American, 0.3% Asian, 0.2% from other races, and 2.1% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 1.6% of the population.

There were 472 households of which 22.0% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 44.1% were married couples living together, 6.4% had a female householder with no husband present, 3.0% had a male householder with no wife present, and 46.6% were non-families. 41.5% of all households were made up of individuals and 22.3% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.07 and the average family size was 2.84.

The median age in the city was 49.9 years. 21.9% of residents were under the age of 18; 4.4% were between the ages of 18 and 24; 17.2% were from 25 to 44; 27.8% were from 45 to 64; and 28.6% were 65 years of age or older. The gender makeup of the city was 48.5% male and 51.5% female.

West Yellowstone, Montana

West Yellowstone is a town in Gallatin County, Montana, adjacent to Yellowstone National Park. The population was 1,271 at the 2010 census. The town is served by Yellowstone Airport. It is part of the Bozeman, MT Micropolitan Statistical Area. It was founded in June 1908 when the Oregon Short Line Railroad was completed. The town's name changed several times until West Yellowstone was settled upon in 1920.[4]

For many, the town of West Yellowstone is a place to stay while traveling through Yellowstone National Park. The town is separated into two parts, residential and commercial, roughly at the road D Parkway. South of D Parkway (Alley) is mainly a business area; north of it is an area of homes and apartments. The area north of D Parkway is known to locals as the "Madison Addition". The town has one school, serving kindergarten through 12th grade.[5]

As of the census[2] of 2010, there were 1,271 people, 617 households, and 298 families residing in the town. The population density was 1,588.8 inhabitants per square mile (613.4/km2). There were 969 housing units at an average density of 1,211.3 per square mile (467.7/km2). The racial makeup of the town was 86.6% White, 0.4% African American, 1.1% Native American, 0.9% Asian, 7.5% from other races, and 3.5% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 17.9% of the population.

There were 617 households, of which 23.7% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 34.7% were married couples living together, 8.4% had a female householder with no husband present, 5.2% had a male householder with no wife present, and 51.7% were non-families. 42.1% of all households were made up of individuals, and 5.8% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.06, and the average family size was 2.86.

Shelby, Montana

According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 6.18 square miles (16.01 km2), of which, 6.03 square miles (15.62 km2) is land and 0.15 square miles (0.39 km2) is water.[1]

Shelby has four distinct seasons, and is considered an arid climate. Long, severe winters give way to springlike weather anywhere from March to May. Summers can be extremely dry and hot, though it is not unusual to experience a snow flurry in July. The area is prone to heat, lightning, hail, and severe thunderstorms during the summer months. Fall weather is often unpredictable, with snow falling during October some years, and temperatures well into the 80s stretching until the end of November on other years. Due to the city's location just off of the Rocky Mountain Front, wind is a constant.

As of the census[2] of 2010, there were 3,376 people, 1,245 households, and 717 families residing in the city. The population density was 559.9 inhabitants per square mile (216.2/km2). There were 1,371 housing units at an average density of 227.4 per square mile (87.8/km2). The racial makeup of the city was 89.5% White, 0.8% African American, 6.5% Native American, 0.5% Asian, 0.8% from other races, and 1.9% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 3.0% of the population.

There were 1,245 households of which 28.3% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 43.8% were married couples living together, 9.2% had a female householder with no husband present, 4.7% had a male householder with no wife present, and 42.4% were non-families. 37.4% of all households were made up of individuals and 14% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.17 and the average family size was 2.84.

Westby, Montana

Westby was founded in 1910 as a town in what was then Williams County, North Dakota (now in Divide County). Danish settlers came up with the name by combining the word west, which noted the town's location in extreme western North Dakota, with the word by, Danish for town. The town remained in North Dakota until 1914, when it was moved slightly across the border so as to be next to a newly built branch line of the Soo Line Railroad and in a state that permitted the sale of alcohol.[5][6]

As of the census[2] of 2010, there were 168 people, 82 households, and 49 families residing in the town. The population density was 311.1 inhabitants per square mile (120.1/km2). There were 114 housing units at an average density of 211.1 per square mile (81.5/km2). The racial makeup of the town was 95.8% White, 2.4% Native American, and 1.8% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 1.8% of the population.

There were 82 households of which 19.5% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 53.7% were married couples living together, 3.7% had a female householder with no husband present, 2.4% had a male householder with no wife present, and 40.2% were non-families. 36.6% of all households were made up of individuals and 12.2% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.05 and the average family size was 2.67.

The median age in the town was 48.3 years. 19% of residents were under the age of 18; 4.3% were between the ages of 18 and 24; 19.1% were from 25 to 44; 35.1% were from 45 to 64; and 22.6% were 65 years of age or older. The gender makeup of the town was 52.4% male and 47.6% female.

Shepherd, Montana

Shepherd is a census-designated place (CDP) in Yellowstone County, Montana, United States. The population was 193 at the 2000 census. Shepherd is a Billings suburb located to the northeast. The unincorporated town was named after R.E. Shepherd, a prominent early settler and owner of the Billings Land and Irrigation Company and the Merchants National Bank.

As of the census[2] of 2000, there were 193 people, 71 households, and 51 families residing in the CDP. The population density was 181.0 people per square mile (69.6/km²). There were 79 housing units at an average density of 74.1 per square mile (28.5/km²). The racial makeup of the CDP was 94.30% White, 4.15% Native American, and 1.55% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 0.52% of the population.

There were 71 households out of which 39.4% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 54.9% were married couples living together, 15.5% had a female householder with no husband present, and 26.8% were non-families. 23.9% of all households were made up of individuals and 4.2% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.72 and the average family size was 3.23.

In the CDP, the population was spread out with 33.7% under the age of 18, 6.2% from 18 to 24, 29.5% from 25 to 44, 22.3% from 45 to 64, and 8.3% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 30 years. For every 100 females there were 112.1 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 96.9 males.

White Sulphur Springs, Montana

As of the census[2] of 2010, there were 939 people, 433 households, and 255 families residing in the city. The population density was 929.7 inhabitants per square mile (359.0/km2). There were 563 housing units at an average density of 557.4 per square mile (215.2/km2). The racial makeup of the city was 97.2% White, 0.1% African American, 0.3% Native American, 0.4% Asian, 0.2% from other races, and 1.7% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 1.4% of the population.

There were 433 households of which 22.2% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 49.4% were married couples living together, 7.9% had a female householder with no husband present, 1.6% had a male householder with no wife present, and 41.1% were non-families. 37.4% of all households were made up of individuals and 19.6% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.13 and the average family size was 2.75.

The median age in the city was 51.2 years. 19% of residents were under the age of 18; 5.1% were between the ages of 18 and 24; 18% were from 25 to 44; 31.4% were from 45 to 64; and 26.3% were 65 years of age or older. The gender makeup of the city was 49.8% male and 50.2% female.

As of the census[11] of 2000, there were 984 people, 443 households, and 265 families residing in the city. The population density was 1,069.1 people per square mile (413.0/km²). There were 567 housing units at an average density of 616.0 per square mile (238.0/km²). The racial makeup of the city was 96.24% White, 1.42% Native American, 0.20% Asian, 0.10% Pacific Islander, 0.51% from other races, and 1.52% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 1.93% of the population.

Sheridan, Montana

Sheridan is a town in Madison County, Montana, United States named after the Civil War general Philip Sheridan. The population was 642 at the 2010 census. Sheridan is known as the "heart of the Ruby Valley." Seven majestic mountain ranges surround this beautiful community. (Tobacco Root Range, Highlands Mountains, McCartney Mountain, The Pioneers, The Ruby Range, The Gravellies and the Snowcrest Range) The geology of the area includes some of the oldest rocks dating back over 2.7 billion years. The Ruby River winds through the valley just west of the town.

In an effort to promote the town - the community has formed a Main Street Improvement Team, provides for free Wi-Fi in town and has their own Web site where artists, businesses, and general information about the area can be found at their home page [1]

As of the census[2] of 2010, there were 642 people, 306 households, and 174 families residing in the town. The population density was 629.4 inhabitants per square mile (243.0/km2). There were 376 housing units at an average density of 368.6 per square mile (142.3/km2). The racial makeup of the town was 95.3% White, 0.3% African American, 0.5% Native American, 0.5% Asian, 0.5% from other races, and 3.0% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 1.1% of the population.

There were 306 households of which 23.2% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 45.1% were married couples living together, 8.8% had a female householder with no husband present, 2.9% had a male householder with no wife present, and 43.1% were non-families. 40.2% of all households were made up of individuals and 20.9% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 1.99 and the average family size was 2.66.

Whitefish, Montana

Whitefish (Salish: epɫx̣ʷy̓u, "has whitefish"[5]) is a city in Flathead County, Montana, United States. The population was 6,357 at the 2010 census. It is home to a ski resort on Big Mountain called Whitefish Mountain Resort.

The Great Northern Railway was built through what is now Whitefish in 1904, which sparked development of the town. The area was originally known as Stumptown due to the abundant amount of timber that had to be cleared to build the town and railroad and because tree stumps were left in the streets throughout downtown.[6] Early residents of the town worked for the railroad and nearby logging industries.[7] By the late 1940s, with the successful construction of a ski resort on Big Mountain (a collaboration among local businessmen) the tourism sector was becoming increasingly important. The community was named for its location near Whitefish Lake.[8][9]

In 2006, over 68,000 passengers embarked and disembarked through the historic Whitefish Depot, a stop on Amtrak's Empire Builder line,[10] with some percentage of those being headed to the ski resort on Big Mountain.

Whitefish is located at 48°14′42″N 114°20′24″W / 48.24500°N 114.34000°W / 48.24500; -114.34000 (48.411772, -114.339865),[11] at an altitude of 3,028 feet (923 m).[12] The town is located on the western side of the continental divide, near Glacier National Park.
