Wyaconda, Missouri

Wyaconda is a city in Clark County, Missouri, United States. The population was 227 at the 2010 census. The city was organized in 1888 and is named after a Siouan name for God or the Great Spirit.[6] The first land purchased from the Santa Fe and Land Co. was in 1888.

At the 2010 census,[2] there were 227 people, 108 households and 63 families in the city. The population density was 354.7 inhabitants per square mile (137.0/km2). There were 140 housing units at an average density of 218.8 per square mile (84.5/km2). The racial makeup of the city was 98.2% White and 1.8% from two or more races.

There were 108 households of which 27.8% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 43.5% were married couples living together, 9.3% had a female householder with no husband present, 5.6% had a male householder with no wife present, and 41.7% were non-families. 38.0% of all households were made up of individuals and 16.6% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.10 and the average family size was 2.76.

The median age was 43.5 years. 24.2% of residents were under the age of 18; 4.7% were between the ages of 18 and 24; 22.1% were from 25 to 44; 30.4% were from 45 to 64; and 18.5% were 65 years of age or older. The population was 49.3% male and 50.7% female.

Zalma, Missouri

Zalma, once known as Bollinger's Mill, is a town on the banks of the winding Castor River at a point where the river makes a horseshoe bend in southern Bollinger County in southeast Missouri. When the railroad moved to town, the name Bollinger's Mill was changed to Zalma, after railroad worker Zalma Block.[6] Zalma is also said to come from a Native American word meaning "the end." As of the 2010 U.S. Census, Zalma had a population of 122.

Zalma is part of the Cape Girardeau−Jackson, MO-IL Metropolitan Statistical Area. Zalma is home to a number of state parks that feature a number of activities such as deer hunting, fishing, bird watching, horseback riding, and hiking. Blue Pond, the deepest natural pond in the state of Missouri, is located outside of Zalma.

In 1800, an Urban Asherbranner (or Asherbramer or Asherbrauner) settled on the upper portion of the Castor River, just where the river empties its waters into Mingo Bottom, and where the village of Zalma is now situated, built a log and brush dam and erected a water mill to grind corn. Philip Bollinger settled nearby.[6][7]

In A History of Missouri (1908), Louis Houck states that the head rights to this mill were owned by Asherbranner himself, but were held instead by Philip Bollinger, a relative of Asherbranner’s wife, Barbara. Philip Bollinger was a relative of Major George Frederick Bollinger, who settled on Whitewater and founded Burfordville in Cape Girardeau County.

Winona, Missouri

As of the census[2] of 2010, there were 1,335 people, 529 households, and 358 families residing in the city. The population density was 350.4 inhabitants per square mile (135.3/km2). There were 595 housing units at an average density of 156.2 per square mile (60.3/km2). The racial makeup of the city was 96.93% White, 0.07% Black or African American, 0.82% Native American, 0.07% Asian, 0.15% from other races, and 1.95% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 1.50% of the population.

There were 529 households of which 38.2% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 46.7% were married couples living together, 14.0% had a female householder with no husband present, 7.0% had a male householder with no wife present, and 32.3% were non-families. 27.0% of all households were made up of individuals and 14.4% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.52 and the average family size was 3.02.

The median age in the city was 34.1 years. 30% of residents were under the age of 18; 9.1% were between the ages of 18 and 24; 23.8% were from 25 to 44; 24.1% were from 45 to 64; and 13% were 65 years of age or older. The gender makeup of the city was 49.6% male and 50.4% female.

As of the census[4] of 2000, there were 1,290 people, 525 households, and 343 families residing in the city. The population density was 342.4 people per square mile (132.1/km²). There were 587 housing units at an average density of 155.8 per square mile (60.1/km²). The racial makeup of the city was 94.96% White, 1.94% Native American, and 3.10% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 0.39% of the population.

Winston, Missouri

Winston was originally called Crofton's Depot, and under the latter name was laid out in 1871 when the railroad was extended to that point.[6] Other early variant names were "Winstonville" and "Emporia".[7] The present name is after F. K. Winston, a railroad official.[6] A post office called Winstonville was established in 1872, the name was changed to Emporia in 1879, and changed once more to Winston in 1885.[8]

Winston has a continental climate with very cold, snowy winters, and warm, rainy and humid summers in which much of the seasonal precipitation falls as thunderstorms. The hottest recorded temperature is 106 °F on August 19, 2003, while the record low temperature is −23 °F on December 23, 1989. Temperatures drop below freezing (32 °F) on an average of 100 days a year. Sub-zero Fahrenheit temperatures occur on average 7 days per year. Temperatures reach 90 °F or higher on an average of 24 days a year, and temperatures over 100 °F four days a year.[citation needed]

As of the census[2] of 2010, there were 259 people, 95 households, and 69 families residing in the village. The population density was 835.5 inhabitants per square mile (322.6/km2). There were 111 housing units at an average density of 358.1 per square mile (138.3/km2). The racial makeup of the village was 97.3% White, 1.2% African American, 0.4% Native American, 0.8% from other races, and 0.4% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 0.8% of the population.

There were 95 households of which 40.0% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 49.5% were married couples living together, 11.6% had a female householder with no husband present, 11.6% had a male householder with no wife present, and 27.4% were non-families. 24.2% of all households were made up of individuals and 5.3% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.73 and the average family size was 3.04.

Wright City, Missouri

Wright City is a city in Warren County, Missouri, United States. It is located on Interstate 70 at mile marker 200 approximately 50 miles (80 km) west of downtown St. Louis. Wright City is a small, semi-rural community area with primarily single-family housing, with some multi-family dwellings. The population was 3,119 at the 2010 census. It has a number of small stores and restaurants. It has various types of light to heavy industrial businesses.

Wright City is located at 38°49′40″N 91°1′27″W / 38.82778°N 91.02417°W / 38.82778; -91.02417 (38.827878, -91.024280).[11] According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 6.06 square miles (15.70 km2), of which, 5.97 square miles (15.46 km2) is land and 0.09 square miles (0.23 km2) is water.[2]

As of the census[3] of 2010, there were 3,119 people, 1,178 households, and 823 families residing in the city. The population density was 522.4 inhabitants per square mile (201.7/km2). There were 1,288 housing units at an average density of 215.7 per square mile (83.3/km2). The racial makeup of the city was 87.0% White, 5.7% African American, 0.2% Native American, 0.4% Asian, 3.7% from other races, and 3.0% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 7.2% of the population.

There were 1,178 households of which 41.9% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 46.5% were married couples living together, 16.5% had a female householder with no husband present, 6.9% had a male householder with no wife present, and 30.1% were non-families. 23.3% of all households were made up of individuals and 6.5% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.65 and the average family size was 3.10.

Vandalia, Missouri

Vandalia is a city in Audrain and Ralls Counties in the U.S. state of Missouri. The population was 3,899 at the 2010 census, which includes about 2000 prisoners incarcerated at the prison located within the City Limits.

Vandalia is located in northeast Missouri in Audrain County - 27 miles from the Mississippi River, 30 miles southwest of Hannibal and 100 miles northwest of St. Louis. The Gateway Western Railroad line runs through the town. U.S. Route 54 passes through Vandalia, connecting it with Illinois to the east and Jefferson City and the Lake of the Ozarks to the south and west.

As of the census[2] of 2010, there were 3,899 people, 1,105 households, and 671 families residing in the city. The population density was 1,740.6 inhabitants per square mile (672.0/km2). There were 1,295 housing units at an average density of 578.1 per square mile (223.2/km2). The racial makeup of the city was 81.4% White, 15.7% African American, 0.4% Native American, 0.4% Asian, 0.3% from other races, and 1.8% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 1.8% of the population.

There were 1,105 households of which 29.0% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 40.9% were married couples living together, 15.1% had a female householder with no husband present, 4.7% had a male householder with no wife present, and 39.3% were non-families. 34.3% of all households were made up of individuals and 16.1% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.24 and the average family size was 2.82.

Webb City, Missouri

Webb City is a city in Jasper County, Missouri, United States. The population was 10,996 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Joplin, Missouri Metropolitan Statistical Area. Webb City also has a police department, a fire department, and animal control services.

Webb City, (Webbville), was platted by John C. Webb in September, 1875[6] and incorporated in December, 1876, with a population of 700. The city was located on a portion of Webb's 200 acre farm, which he entered in February, 1857. There, in 1873, Webb discovered lead while plowing.[7] With the assistance of W.A. Daugherty, he sank the first pump-shaft in 1874. Webb then leased his land to Daugherty and G.P. Ashcraft. In 1876 the Center Creek Mining Company leased the land and began operations. Some 20 years later 700 mines were located within the limits of Webb City and adjacent Carterville and the district ranked first in the production of zinc ore (black jack).

The St. Louis and San Francisco Railroad was built to Webb City in 1879, the Missouri Pacific in 1881. The population increased from 1,588 in 1880 to 9,201 in 1900. After the success of the first Webb City sheet ground mine ("Yellow Dog") in the 1890s, business boomed. The 100 room Newland Hotel was built and co-educational Webb City College was established. The Webb City Mining District was prominently represented at the Chicago Columbia Exposition in 1893, and at the 1898 Omaha International Exhibit. Webb City received for its mineral display the only silver medal awarded. A.H. Rogers built a mule street car line from Webb City to Carterville, 1889, predecessor of the SouthWest Missouri Electric Railway, established 1893, and expanded in the 1900s to a vast inter-urban system with power plant, car barns and an employee club house at Webb City.

After the decline of mining in the postwar period, Webb City turned to diversified industrial and agricultural production. In the 1930s and during World War II, explosives were manufactured by powder plants located near Webb City.

Vanzant, Missouri

Vanzant is an unincorporated community in northeastern Douglas County, Missouri, United States. It is located on Route 95 at the intersection with state route W about one mile south of Route 76 and thirteen miles south of Mountain Grove.[1] The community of Drury is about three miles south on Route 95. Vanzant post office was established in 1892 and was assigned a zip code of 65768.[2] The community was named after an early settler.[3]

Vanzant is located on a ridge at an elevation of 1,150 feet (350 m) between south flowing tributary streams of Bryant Creek, Fox Creek to the west and Brush Creek to the east. The Vanzant community church is located to the north at the intersection of Routes 95 and 76 and the Vanzant cemetery is about one half mile to the southeast on route W. The community is within the northwest corner of a section of the Mark Twain National Forest.[1]

Wellington, Missouri

In November 2013, Leland Ray Kolkmeyer plead guilty, in federal court, of a fraud scheme in which he embezzled more than $1.5 million from Wellington-Napoleon Fire Protection District and Special Road District while being their former treasurer.[8][9][10]

Wellington is located at 39°08′00″N 93°59′06″W / 39.133360°N 93.985049°W / 39.133360; -93.985049.[11] According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 1.13 square miles (2.93 km2), of which, 1.09 square miles (2.82 km2) is land and 0.04 square miles (0.10 km2) is water.[1]

Wellington lies just a few miles east of Napoleon, Missouri; the two towns having been named after the commanders at the Battle of Waterloo. About halfway between the two towns lies a small, unincorporated crossroads called "Waterloo".

As of the census[2] of 2010, there were 812 people, 322 households, and 225 families residing in the city. The population density was 745.0 inhabitants per square mile (287.6/km2). There were 357 housing units at an average density of 327.5 per square mile (126.4/km2). The racial makeup of the city was 95.9% White, 1.0% African American, 0.2% Native American, 1.0% from other races, and 1.8% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 2.7% of the population.

Verona, Missouri

As of the census[2] of 2010, there were 619 people, 206 households, and 146 families residing in the city. The population density was 711.5 inhabitants per square mile (274.7/km2). There were 239 housing units at an average density of 274.7 per square mile (106.1/km2). The racial makeup of the city was 68.2% White, 1.5% Native American, 0.2% Pacific Islander, 27.9% from other races, and 2.3% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 45.7% of the population.

There were 206 households of which 45.6% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 53.9% were married couples living together, 11.7% had a female householder with no husband present, 5.3% had a male householder with no wife present, and 29.1% were non-families. 26.7% of all households were made up of individuals and 15% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 3.00 and the average family size was 3.68.

The median age in the city was 30.7 years. 33.8% of residents were under the age of 18; 7.8% were between the ages of 18 and 24; 27.1% were from 25 to 44; 19.6% were from 45 to 64; and 12% were 65 years of age or older. The gender makeup of the city was 50.4% male and 49.6% female.

As of the census[4] of 2000, there were 714 people, 238 households, and 170 families residing in the town. The population density was 820.3 people per square mile (316.9/km²). There were 252 housing units at an average density of 289.5 per square mile (111.8/km²). The racial makeup of the town was 79.41% White, 1.54% African American, 0.70% Native American, 0.28% Asian, 16.39% from other races, and 1.68% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 30.95% of the population.
